Public annual report 2023

AEB Amsterdam presents its public annual report for 2023. In this report, we inform customers, suppliers, neighbors, and other stakeholders in an accessible way about developments within our company.

A turbulent year

In May, AEB was affected by an explosion in an electrical room, leading to a significant capacity limitation. The nationwide nitrous oxide ban resulted in many empty nitrous oxide cylinders in our ovens, which also caused explosions. These incidents reduced our incineration capacity by fifteen to twenty percent and led to high repair costs. In addition to lower production, AEB also faced decreased revenue from energy sales in 2023. In 2022, prices were still high due to the war in Ukraine.

All these developments together led to significantly lower revenue for AEB in 2023. Turnover fell from €220 million in 2022 to €190 million in 2023, while costs increased to €193 million—an increase of €38 million. Additionally, we invested nearly €70 million in safety and extending the lifespan of our installations. The financial result for 2023 was negative, with a loss of approximately €26 million. In contrast, in 2022, we recorded a profit of €35 million.

New strategy

AEB stands on the brink of a new phase. We take responsibility for actively accelerating the transition to a circular economy. Our goal is to utilize resources from waste as efficiently as possible—a choice that is both socially and economically responsible. This transition requires time and effort, but we continue to build steadily, together with our employees and our customers.
