Working together towards a safe and future-proof waste chain

Dear relation,

In this edition of our newsletter, we inform you about three developments that directly affect safety, regulations and cooperation within the waste chain.

First, we would like to draw your attention to the high mercury peaks recently measured in our installation. Mercury is a Substance of Very High Concern and does not belong in regular waste streams. Together with you, we want to prevent recurrence by remaining vigilant in the careful separation and delivery of waste streams.

In addition, we are preparing for the introduction of DIWASS, the new European digital system for international waste shipments. This change marks an important step towards further professionalisation and transparency within the chain.

Finally, we introduce MijnAEB, our new customer portal. Through this platform you will have direct access to your data and we make our services more accessible and efficient.

Together we are working towards safe, reliable and future-proof waste processing.

Kind regards,

Wim van Lieshout
Director
AEB Amsterdam

Elevated mercury levels detected in waste streams: your alertness is required

In late January and early February, we observed increased mercury concentrations in our flue gases. Below we explain what was measured, which measures were taken immediately and how we aim to prevent recurrence.

During the incineration of incoming waste, elevated mercury concentrations were measured in our stack.

Within our flue gas cleaning system, several steps are designed to capture mercury, including the use of activated carbon and sodium sulfide. In situations with increased mercury levels, we also have a specific working instruction for our operators.

After the peak was detected, the dosage of activated carbon and sodium sulfide was immediately increased. Despite these measures, the concentrations did not decrease immediately. The measured values were temporarily so high that the measuring equipment exceeded its normal measurement range.

The increased mercury load continued for several days.

Preventing recurrence together

Mercury does not belong in regular waste streams. It poses a risk to both people and the environment and requires additional control measures within our installation.

We therefore strongly request that you remain alert to the presence of mercury-containing materials in your waste streams and ensure they are correctly separated and reported. Only together can we prevent such peaks from occurring again.

Do you have questions about acceptance criteria or doubts about a specific waste stream? Please contact your AEB Sales contact. We will be happy to assist you.

DIWASS: digital waste transport within the EU

From 21 May, the European Union will introduce the new digital EVOA system: DIWASS (Digital Waste Shipment System). With the revised European Waste Shipment Regulation, all administrative processes surrounding international waste transport will be fully digitalised. This marks the end of the paper era.

DIWASS simplifies processes, enables secure exchange of documents and improves traceability of waste shipments across Europe.

What does this mean for your organisation?

Do you ship waste from the Netherlands to another country or receive waste from abroad? If so, you will use DIWASS going forward. The system will become the central European platform for:

  • applications
  • formal approvals
  • administrative management of international waste shipments

Information will be exchanged digitally and centrally between competent authorities, transporters, waste producers and waste recipients.

What will change for AEB?

As with any new system, some adjustment will be required. At the same time, we expect DIWASS to result in time savings, greater efficiency and better insight into active EVOA waste streams for AEB Amsterdam and our international partners.

More information about DIWASS is available on the the website of the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).

MijnAEB: your data directly available

Would you like to view your weighing data or invoices? Or request a waste stream number? You can now do so through MijnAEB, the new customer portal of AEB Amsterdam.

After an extensive testing and optimisation phase, the foundation of MijnAEB is ready for use. All data relating to weighed and invoiced waste is now digitally available for our Dutch customers.

What can you do via MijnAEB?

Through the portal you can:

  • view weighing data and invoices
  • request waste stream numbers
  • submit contact requests via Service & Contact

This contributes to more reliable customer data and shorter response times.

Roles within your organisation

Within MijnAEB two roles are available:

Administrator
The main contact person within your organisation. Has access to all information and assigns permissions to colleagues.

User
Depending on assigned rights, users can view data, request waste stream numbers and submit contact requests.

Our Sales department will contact you soon to invite you to MijnAEB. We will gladly guide you through the onboarding process so you can make optimal use of the portal.
